Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' first season has been one hell of a ride. But will fans get a season 2 of Monarch or is the Godzilla series already nearing its end? Here's to hope – cast and crew seem to be optimistic!
First and foremost: I won't spoil anything, don't you worry.
Expanding the MonsterVerse was a brillant idea, I've gotta say: thanks to Godzilla vs. Kong, fans have been blessed with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+ and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong.
Fifteen years after the original Godzilla re-emerged and did his thing, Cate Randa's journey to Japan in order to settle her father's affairs turns out way different than anyone could have suspected: not only does she have a half-brother, there's the Titan monitoring organization Monarch connected to her father – all that needs investigation.
And now, one season later, fans have to wait for Apple TV's decision: is Monarch getting renewed or not?
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 | Will Godzilla Return?
At the time of writing, there hasn't been an official announcement whether or not Monarch will return for a second season.
And it could take some time until there's a definitive answer to that question, but as it stands, the MonsterVerse is obviously expanding more and more each year. Chances are, if Monarch is a success, Apple TV+ is probably going to greenlight a second season.
And I'm not alone in that prediction. Lots of crew members showed some hope to The Direct and spilling the beans on the plans: "Well, it wasn't designed as a limited series," executive producer Matt Fraction told them. "We could keep going as long as people want to keep watching."
And he's not the only one: showrunner Chris Black shares the sentiment that "it's kind of really up to the viewers" and he's like to go on for "two seasons, three seasons – whatever we're lucky enough to get." But, as it often is in the entertainment biz, it's less a question of luck and more of profit. If a second season is happening or not basically depends on the reception – enough people watching Monarch, and enough people liking it.
Hoping for a renewal aren't only the fans, though. With them in the trenches: the cast.
The Monarch Cast Has High Hopes For Season 2
The present day cast, Anna Sawai (Cate Randa), Ren Watabe (Kentaro Randa) and Kiersey Clemons (May) sat down with Collider before the finale aired, sharing their hopes for season 2.
Watabe and Clemons both said they'd like to "jump into new terrain" in a possible second season – I see what you did there. Clever wording.
Their co-star Anna Sawai put one big thing into words as well:
"I feel like in the first season we were kind of searching for answers a lot of the time, kind of lost. We're not really doing too much but finding, going to search for things, so I kind of want us to start something."
Sounds like someone's eager to prove themselves. And let's be honest: the show wasn't "designed as a limited series?" The cast being hopeful? Smells like a possible season 2 is the only reasonable option to me!
As long as Apple TV+ doesn't speak on the matter, though, this is all just speculation. We'll keep you updated either way!
