The Mandalorian is a wrap – at least in the form of a show. There won't be a season 4, but that doesn't mean the story of Din and Grogu is over. They'll make a return, but this time on the big screen instead. Here's everything you need to know about the new Star Wars movie!
Admittedly, the third season of The Mandalorian neatly wrapped up the story of Din Djarin and Grogu. No mid- or post-credit scene, no loose threads, no nothing – still, fans were hoping for season 4 (naturally).
As always, and especially within the Star Wars universe, there are always more stories to tell, and Din and Grogu are no exception. There are still adventures to be found, and this duo are far from retiring.
But, they won't be returning to TV, the two of them will actually be getting a spinoff movie! Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming movie.
No Season 4 For The Mandalorian, But A Movie
2024 started out pretty good for Star Wars fans: not only did Ahsoka get renewed for a second season, The Mandalorian fans got an even bigger announcement: the Mandalorian is headed straight to theaters.

Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production later this year.

Mandalorian writer Jon Favreau is back at it again, ready to bring the beloved duo to the big screen:
"I have loved telling stirues set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."
The seeds for that were planted even earlier, back in 2023. Back then, season 4 was still in talks. Jon Favreau spoke about already having the fourth season of The Mandalorian all worked out, in an interview with BFMTV.
Season 4? Yeah, I’ve written it already. We have to know where we’re going to tell a fully formed story, so we had mapped it out, Dave and I, and then slowly you just write each episode. So I was writing during post-production, because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.
Switching formats might be a smart move, depending on the direction their next adventure is heading in – fingers crossed the movie won't be a rushed version of a whole new season!
Do We Have A Release Date For The Mandalorian Movie?
The movie will go into production sometime in 2024, but we don't have an exact release date. However, we can give you some release news.
There are three Star Wars films currently in development, including this one. We know that one is coming in May 2026, another is coming in December 2026, and the third should be released in December 2027. But we don't know which of those three booked slots is for Mando.
The precise booked slots are as follows:
- May 22, 2026
- December 18, 2026
- December 17, 2027
We can't confirm which of these dates is supposed to be the Mandalorian movie release, but no matter the case, fans will have to be patient. Silver lining: there's no rush to rewatch the show, you've got at least two years.
The Mandalorian Movie: Who Can We Expect To Return For The Cast?
Let's just be honest, if Pedro Pascal doesn't come back, what are we even doing here? Luckily, we can't imagine him quitting or Jon Favreau already working on the movie if he knew Pedro Pascal was not gonna come back.
With production starting in 2024, it could be a pretty busy year for him: he also has to to The Last of Us' second season that year, but I'm positive he's got it all planned out accordingly.
Looking at the rest of the cast, it is pretty hard to say who is gonna return, if they even return. We're still hopeful that maybe, just maybe, Carl Weathers might reprise his role as Greef Karga. We also hope for Katee Sackhoff and Emily Swallow to return as Bo-Katan Kryze and The Armorer, respectively.
Looking at how season 3 ended, we think you can make a solid argument for these characters to make a return – depending on where the story is headed, of course!
How Could The Mandalorian Season 4 Continue The Plot?
Even though Jon Favreau has been working on the script for quite some time now, there is no official info yet. Season 3 provided us with a nice happy ending, but with Grand Admiral Thrawn making an appearance, there is always room for more adventures.
With the change of plans, scratching the idea of season 4 and going with a movie release instead, chances are we'll be treated to a completely new story with just a few ties to the show. That way, those who haven't seen the show would be able to enjoy the movie even without previous knowledge.
Whatever the case – we'll make sure to keep you updated on the Mandoverse!
