Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender had a pretty strong debut, outranking even One Piece. But how about a second season? Here's what we know so far about a potential release date, the cast and where the plot might be headed.
Adaptation of beloved franchises can be a frickle thing – some are just happy that they get to explore more of a world that's near and dear to their hearts, others are highly disappointed with the execution. Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is no exception to that.
Taking the live-action Avatar for what it is, it isn't too bad, though. There are some changes from the original that are still waiting to properly pay off, but all things considered, Netflix could have messed up way more. Also, even in the original, the first season was the weakest one (and still set a pretty high standard).
There are lots of ways the live-action show could improve, just like the source material did with its second season – but are we even getting one?
Will There Be A Season 2 For Netflix's Avatar?
We're still waiting for Netflix to officially announce the renewal of their Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation, but considering it only recently released on February 22, it's no wonder there haven't been any news just yet.
Even though nothing is set in stone, we're pretty confident that a second season is only a matter of time. With an even stronger debut than One Piece, Avatar's season 2 is basically a safe bet, as far as we're concerned, considering One Piece also got renewed.
As far as a potential release date goes, we can only speculate. Producing the first season took its sweet time from November 2021 to release in February 2024, so chances are we won't be getting any more live-action Avatar until 2026.
The Potential Cast Of Avatar's Season 2 On Netflix
Seeing as the cast is one of the stronger aspects of Netflix's go at Avatar, we're pretty sure the main characters will return, including Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Knowing what's to come, we'll probably also see Maria Zhang reprise her role as Suki.
Fans of the original will know that there's an important role to cast: Toph Beifong, the best earthbender there ever was and ever will be. Getting that casting right will be one hell of a challenge if the production team wants to do better than the Ember Island Players – if that's not what they're aiming for, then John Cena or Dwayne The Rock Johnson might be their best bet. But I digress...
It's not only Toph to look forward to – whoever plays her at the end of the day – but also a season with some of the most memorable scenes in the whole world of Avatar.
Book 2: Earth – What's Netflix Gonna Do With The Plot?
The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender already gave us glimpses of some scenes that were supposed to happen later. We've already met Wan Shi Tong, the not so friendly owl, outside of the library, so chances are we'll meet the spirit again once the Gaang hits the desert. If they even do, that is: in the first season's finale, we already got the calendar showing that Sozin's Comet is approaching. Considering that Netflix doesn't shy away from changing up plotlines, they could skip the library entirely – hopefully they won't though.
Another thing that's already been in the show is the Cave of Two Lovers – except now, it's kind of the Cave of Two Siblings. There's no point in recycling that in a potential second season, so the Kataang fans get deprived of their ambivalent fade-to-black-scene.
There's still a whole lot that's waiting for us: the Earth Kingdom capital city, Ba Sing Se, for instance. And, most importantly, the Tales of Ba Sing Se – I think we're all in the same boat here when I say: if we don't get that episode in a perfect live-action adaptation, we'll riot. And while we're at it: ruin "Zuko Alone" and I'll ruin you, Netflix.
So, season 2 will see the Gaang in the Earth Kingdom, just like in the original. Get ready for some plotlines to get ditched, though – if the first season didn't have the time to get them all in the adaptation, chances are we'll have to live without some plotlines in the second season as well.
